Real ranch is a mix of mayonnaise, sour cream and buttermilk with plenty of fresh herbs. It takes ten minutes and tastes noticeably fresher than bottled dressing.

Use less buttermilk for a thick dip and more for a pourable salad dressing.

Ingredient substitutions

  • Buttermilk → 1/2 cup milk mixed with 1/2 tbsp lemon juice, rested 5 minutes
  • Sour cream → plain Greek yogurt
  • Fresh herbs → 1 tsp each dried dill and parsley

Flavor variations

  • Spicy ranch: add 1 tsp hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne.
  • Avocado ranch: blend in half a ripe avocado.

Tips and troubleshooting

  • The dressing thickens in the fridge; stir in a splash of buttermilk before serving if needed.

Storage and food safety

  • Refrigerate in a sealed jar for up to 5 days. Shake or stir before using.

What to serve it with

  • Green salads and wedge salads
  • Vegetable sticks and wings
  • Grilled chicken and wraps
