Classic Burger Sauce — Creamy, tangy burger sauce with mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and pickle relish Save to Pinterest

This is the kind of pink, tangy special sauce served at burger joints: mayonnaise for body, ketchup and mustard for tang, and sweet pickle relish for crunch.

It tastes best after resting in the fridge, so make it before you start cooking the burgers.

Ingredient substitutions

  • Sweet relish → finely chopped dill pickles plus a pinch of sugar
  • Yellow mustard → Dijon mustard (sharper)
  • Smoked paprika → sweet paprika

Flavor variations

  • Spicy: add 1–2 tsp hot sauce.
  • Smoky: add 1 tsp barbecue sauce.

Tips and troubleshooting

  • Finely chop the relish if yours is chunky, so the sauce spreads evenly on buns.
  • A splash of pickle juice works in place of the vinegar.

Storage and food safety

  • Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

What to serve it with

  • Smash burgers and cheeseburgers
  • Fries and onion rings
  • Chicken sandwiches and wraps
